Hey guys, so I wasn't in class this past week and I was wondering if you did anything with the project?

Only a couple of us were there - we went over where we were, what we still need to do. Dr. Levy sent us e-mails on our original submissions, which you prob. have had for a week or so, now. (I've only just managed to get into the blog, today.)

I was wondering if you guys could give me some feed back on my project idea. It is as follows: I am going to take a group of eight 3rd grade-kids (4 pairs) to a gymnasium and run a game with them. The game is a race to see who can make it around a set circle, get a tennis ball that is in the middle, and multiply the two numbers together on the ball. Who ever then runs over to me and tells me the correct answer first gets a point for their team/pair. i am going for practicing their multiplication in a timely matter. it is a little confusing to explain without demonstrating it, but hopefully you get the gist to give me some feed back. I would appreciate it tons!

Math and motion needs to be carefully thought through. There are physiological changes that happen in the brain when students are involved in competition, especially physical competition. It is sometimes called “fight or flight”. When the adrenaline kicks in, critical thinking processes tend to turn off. Students, who might be able to quickly calculate multiplication sitting at a desk, may not be able to do the same calculations while involved in physical competition. Anyone have any ideas for adjusting this activity to get around this issue?

I am not sure how you could inccorporate it but you could do the same game maybe while sitting in a circle and making it into a duck-duck goose situation where they toss the ball back and forth.....not sure where I am going with this but I will let you know on monday....anyone have any further thoughts on that?

Here is some links to an interesting device called a "reactable", designed in barcelona it uses geometric objects programed with certain functions in order to make music and sound, this is really awesome... Check it out

I had a question that I was hoping someone could answer for me. I was wondering if we have to teach the kids something new or if it can be a review of something they already know, just thought about in a different way?

For this project it is not necessary to teach something new. You can design it to help you understand what the child/children know and are able to do. Therefore, the answer to your questions is yes, it can be a review.

Retractable is fasinating. I like the idea of a sort of value being associated with the different geometric figures and that when they interact the values change. (Esp. w/ younger students, I'd wonder about them associating these specific values & interactions w/ the shapes, so I'm not sure about using it as other than a "cool thing" for learning.)

On the Math and Lit blog i noticed that you said that you (Andra) are seeing if we can analyze the students work. What if the activity we have planned doesn't have any student work that goes along with it...should i adjust it to get the students to write something that they remember about the activity or about what they may have learned?

I also had another question for Andrea: I am doing the service learning credits and I was wondering if I needed my supervisor to sign a paper showing that I did the activity with the kids?

You do not need to have student work, however, you should be taking note of what students are doing. As for service credits, your supervisor will need to sign a time sheet. I will also send out a form/short report for the supervisor to fill out.

Hallelujah! After having the scheduled times for the exercise fall through twice, I just got confirmation. And my student "thinks it's really cool" - relief!

I (finally) had my session this am. And it worked! And my 8 yo student liked it & she knows more fractions now!

It was raining day recess on Monday.....we have areas for k-2nd to go to. I had grade K and the kids love to do their favorite things with me that I have them do to get them moving. I do this because they are not able to run around outside when It is raining. So we count from 1 to 100. We have to different version that we dance to for counting. We have a jazz version for count to and move to as well. Then we have a upbeat tempo count that we move to look for number in certain areas. The kids just get a kick out of it the love doing the 1 to 100 on raining day recess...Just a little share...Thank you for your patience.
